Halloween is a big deal at BS3 Community Nurseries. This October, our Nursery children have gone wild with witchy wonder, spooky sensory setups and marvellous magic potions
A very spooky Halloween set up
Julia Donaldson’s picture books have provided us with lots of Halloween inspiration this month. We enjoyed jumping into the magical worlds of our favourite characters with a dash of excitement and a sprinkling of ‘mwah – ha-ha’.
“Room on the Broom”, prompted some big sensory fun for our little ones, who enjoyed listening to the story before getting their hands dirty with some bubbly potion mixing of their own.
We LOVE mixing potions
Potion mixing is actually magic, because so much learning is hidden within the fun.
It fosters creativity and imagination, and helps to develop fine motor skills, gross motor skills and hand-eye coordination. Some of the benefits include:
- Learning about colour mixing
- Sensory exploration (different smells, textures and colours)
- Developing social skills and team work
- Maths (recognising numbers, measuring and counting)
- Language development (new vocab, opportunities for mark-making)
Halloween Play Tray Set-ups
Our practitioners love a good sensory play tray set up almost as much as our little ones love playing with (deconstructing) them! We think you’ll agree that they’ve outdone themselves with these creepy, colourful creations.
Decorating our spaces
In preparation for the big event, our nursery children got their hands dirty and helped to make some of the coolest Halloween decorations we’ve ever seen. We’re obsessed with the textured pumpkin and cute little bat.
Exploring Halloween with all our senses
The children have been (trick or) treated to a range of themed activities including:
- Pumpkin painting
- Potion making with jelly and a selection of textures
- Sensory playtrays
- Pumpkin scooping and mixing
- Halloween face painting
We think you’ll agree that this Halloween has been pretty SPELL-tacular. The only concern now is how we will manage to top this for Christmas!
