We were thrilled to take part in National Storytelling Week (1 February to 9 February) across our Nursery Rooms, enjoying sharing books together and exploring how stories can make us feel and increase our understanding of the world around us. This year’s theme was “Reimaging Your World”, which gave lots of opportunities to immerse ourselves in lots of our favourite books, as well as discovering some new ones over the week.
Supporting children’s literacy development is not just about reading from books – there are lots of ways to incorporate storytelling into your child’s day. Engaging children’s imaginations through dress up and role play is a wonderful way to extend children’s enjoyment and understanding of stories. Singing nursery rhymes with your child supports language, pre-reading and pre-writing skills as they learn to hear different sounds and words in the rhymes. Making up stories helps nurture children’s creativity and imagination.
Why not have a go at an imagined story prompt with your child? You can chat to your child about the worlds in their imagination wherever you are, and even whilst you are on the move. Here is a suggestion to get you started…
